What Winning Looks Like + What I Wore To The Emmy Awards @ZapposStyle
by Kéla Walker
Happy Monday!! I’m still on a high from this weekend and The NY Emmy Awards Ceremony that took place Saturday. No, I didn’t bring home the gold statue but I felt like a winner no less. It’s one of the most inspiring nights any media professional could have. Ooh, girl and I had the look to match. When I tell you fun was had… TRUST ME.
Koninue to go inside the NY Emmy Awards with me and see what it looks like to win at the big event
The NY Emmy Awards honor the best of the best in NYC television region and includes a who’s who of the industry. It’s basically like the oscars of the TV industry. It’s an honor to be in the room much less to be nominated for a body of work that I’m extremely proud of. Speaking of which many of you have asked about the project and how you can watch it. It’s called Catalyst and highlights the unsung heroes of NYC- the rock stars of the community who are sparking change to make a difference for others. I pretty much came up with everything from the concept and camera angles to the edit style and graphic look. (with lots of help, of course) It’s quite the labor of love so for it to be nominated is quite an honor and reward within itself. Check out one of my favorite’s here and here
My colleague and
longtime friend brother, Wiener Milien served as the Director of Photography on Catalyst. I wouldn’t be here without this man. He’s known me since day one, when I was a baby starting my career and had no idea what I was doing and has encouraged and supported me every step of the way. He’s ridiculously talented (He already has an Emmy) and getting to work with him on this series meant the world to me. In fact, it was an honor. He made sure I had the right look and feel of the series. Thank GOD for his patience and faith in me. I would throw all types of adjectives at him on what I wanted it to look like and he made sure it all came together for what is now an Emmy nominates series. Working with him made this nomination all the more special. To take this journey with him was EVERYTHING.
PAUSE. Yall know I snapchatted all night, right? If you follow me there you know Susan and got to see how she showed up and out at the Emmys. Everyone snapped me saying that she SLAYED. She loved the love. Seeing her shine was a huge win for me.
I was at the winning table.
With my Colleagues and fellow NY Emmy Award Nominees. Congrats to Elliot, David (not pictured) Makayla and Frankie who won awards – Me and my friends got Emmys to Spin (Inside Snapchat joke)
Elliot and Ivan ( pictured left) were also contributors on Catalyst serving as Second DP.
Okay, now for the details on my about my look, because ow you’re only here for the details on what I wore so here goes… This was my third time attending the awards show and I’ve done it every way there is to do it (ball gown, cocktail dress) so I wanted to mix things up a little bit for this third round. I’ve had this jumpsuit in my kloset for a while now waiting for the right event to pull it out for. It was the perfect number for the occasion. And the fact that it’s from Zappos. *SQUEAL* I love that I can get everything my from favorite denim and must have heels to formal attire in one place. There’s nothing they can’t supply. I had a little shoe conundrum when deciding on my final look and Zappos sent me an alternative pair within 24 hours. You have to love their free overnight shipping.
Lydell NYC provided my jewels for the evening presenting me with lots of options to choose from for my look. They’re pieces are so trendy and chic and AFFORDABLE- great for fashionista that want to look the part without spending a lot. I ended up going with the Houston Necklace and a few bracelets – The somer on one arm and the hawthorne, the coffey on the other along with the milton ring. I love the two chain combo of the choker with the long herringbone. I especially loved how it fell in the cut of my jumpsuit.
My girlfriend and celeb MUA Camara A Unique did my makeup for the evening , giving me million dollar look to match how I felt. BTW- she’s offering a 1×1 lessons for folks that need a little help with their makeup and want to up their beauty game. Get more deets here and signup for a session.
I may not have won an Emmy Award but as far as I’m concerned I walked away with the gold. Statue or not, I felt like a winner Saturday evening. I know it sounds cliche but it’s the utmost truth.
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would be in attendance at the Emmy Awards, much less be a 5x nominee. I’m just a girl from NC who wanted to work in TV. I am proof that God’s dreams for you are so much bigger than your own. Not only do I get to live out my dreams but I get to work with the best of the best in the business. If that ain’t winning I don’t know what is. So please remember, whatever your dreams are, keep pushing and trust that it can be reality.
