How Black Girls Rock Almost Didn’t Happen

by Kéla Walker

Like everyone I was pretty estactic about the Black Girls Rock Award show this past week. It’s one of my favorite events to attend but can I tell you how I almost ccompletely missed the show.

Typical Black Girls Rock  is held on the weekend-specifically Saturday but since Rihanna was behind honored and is on the middle of touring the show was hosted on a Friday (her NJ show was scheduled for Saturday)  Sounds simple, right? NO SO MUCH.  The show is hosted in New Jersey which meant attendees had to commute with traffic going into Jersey on a work day. What should have been a 45 minute trip took  me 2 hours.  If I didnt know any better I’d think someone died in the Holland tunne.  By the time I arrived they were no longer letting people. SERIOUSLY.

I was left on the outside like.

Hilary Clinton was in the building which meant top notch security and ecret Service was not allowing any more guest in the building. Yall now I  was tight, right? Driving all the way for nothing not to mention I did my make up real nice for the occasion and had the oufit to match.  You know we hate nothing more thant wasting a great look on an insiginficant matter.

Thank GOD for Pateince. . . 40 minutes later just when I thought I might throw in the towel and go off to dinner somewhere fancy, the doors opened up like the gates of heaven.  Thank You sweet baby Jesus. Hilary had exited the building and they were once again allowing people to enter.

I missed a couple acts but saw enough to make it all worth wild.  Shonda Rimes, Rihanna, Gladys Night, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi (the creators of #BlackLivesMatter)… it was pretty awesome to see these amazing women be honored. The work they have done, the paths they have blazed. Truly, Black Girls Rock! It’s so awesome and beyond words to see their brilliance shine.  Oh and did I mention I got to see Lauren Hill perform. I can finally check that off my bucket list. Making the experience even sweeter,  I got to share it all with my good friend Sass- perhaps you recognize her form my snapchat. She doesn’t work in the industry and she’s not a blogger and normally only watches Black Girls Rock on television so being able to bring her to her first award show taping was special.

I love when I’m able to share the perks of life with my friends and family.  Needless to say we had a blast.  We would have had a completely different experience if we were  stuck outside for the duration of the show. By the way, our seats were pretty damn awesome. Shoutout to my connect!!! We were seated nice and center of the orchestra.  Boy am I glad those seats didn’t go to waste. I wish I had a picture to show you but BET doesn’t play that during taping of live events.

When you get to enjoy black girls rock with your friends

After party fun with my Ty and Sass where Erykah Badu was the DJ.   If you follow me on snap you saw the fun we had first hand.

Boy am I glad this story turned out for the better.  Be sure to catch Black Girls Rock Tuesday night on BET. Who knows, maybe you’ll catch a glimpst of me and my friends in the audience.
