Curly Q’s and Straight Talk with Essence & Pantene

by Kéla Walker

Last week I had the distinct pleasure of sitting on a panel for Essence Magazine & Pantene Hair. * SQUEAL* “The Curly Q’s and Straight Talk” conversation created a united front for natural and relaxed hair women alike.  It was such and honor to sit on the panel and represent for the relaxed ladies out there. #funners
I posted quite a few pictures on Instagram but of course I had to share my experience here on KK

Kontinue for my recap and experience at the Essence and Pantene event

Many thanks to Essence and Pantene for having me on this panel! I’ve done a couple of panels  here and there but this was one of my first big ones with legendary brands like Essence and Pantene.  IT WAS EVERYTHING.
The conversation was moderated by Essence Magazine’s Style & Beauty Director Pamela Edwards and included of course moi, Renae Bluitt of In Her Shoes Blog, Beauty Vlogger Tiarra Monet,  Aliah Davis of GetFitDiva.com, and Celeb Stylist Brain Man providing expert insight.

As the only relaxed member of the panel I gotta admit I was a little  ambivalent about what my experience would be.  Naturalists can be a little less than inviting especially at events where they dominate and as my co-panelist Tiarra said there are some Natural Natzi who are ready to attack anything not natural.   To often we scrutinize each other and create this separation between the naturals and relaxed to which I respond “keep calm, I’m relaxed” lol.   However his event was anything but THAT and was all about healthy and strong hair, no matter it’s texture. I shared that I have been relaxed since age 12 and not really knowing  my natural hair feels like and  I’M OKAY WITH THAT. Just like I told the audience, please don’t judge me and do not feel sorry for me. lol

Can I just tell you how I adored each and every one of my fellow panelist.  You Tuber Tairra Monet (natural / wig wearer) who I met for the first time is now my new bestie in my head. We were so twinning for the event- peep the side part bob, pink outfits  and white nails

You already know I adore Renae Bluitt of In Her Shoes Blog / Crush Media (natural) who’s event I had the pleasure of being the Mistress of Ceremonies for earlier this month. I also met Aliyah of  The Get Fit Diva ( naturalist) and hairstylist Brian Mann  who provided expert insight. They were so sweet and fun to chat with. There were so many great tips shared by all.  Tiara shared that she’s a big fan of wigs primarily because of their diversity and it’s a great form  of protective styling.  She was actually wearing one and I can attest to the fact that it looked really good.  Like so good, I want one.  lol. Brian also shared that you should treat your scalp not just your strands, suggesting that we rub sea breeze (YES, the ASTRINGENT)  through our scalp to minimize buildup and declog pores, especially after working out.  Who knew?

After the conversation guests enjoyed massages, cocktails and touch ups at a Pantene pamper station before a mini photoshoot.

I also met Cynthia of Addicted to Etsy who is so darn KUTE.  I have been following her for eons and we’ve even email chatted  so it was great to finally meet her in person.  She served as the digital MC for the event – I mean really, HOW KUTE IS SHE?!!!

Overall it was a good time and and it really  felt god to be in a beautiful & friendly environment with so many gorgeous women.

About what I wore? Well I’m glad you asked.  I’ve been saving this suit for some time now, waiting for the right moment  to pull her out and this was so it. Everyone kept asking me about it and of course, the sparkling  shoes.

What I  Wore:

Suite ~ Zara | Cami ~ H&M  (which I’m so addicted to the is season) | Heels ~ Rachel Roy | Necklace ~ Banana Republic

At the end of the night, there was no heels to switch out of (you know what I’m talking about) as my driver, Yes, my driver, Mike, drove me from door to door. Yep, the good folks at Essence & Pantene  provided me a driver for the event *squeal*. A girl could get use to such a thing.
