It use to be that bobby pins were  discreetly tucked away holding your look in tack but as of late they have taken center stage.  The bobby-pins-as-accessory trend first caught our attention a few years ago when Rihanna donned the look at the American Music Awards. It was one of those typical RiRi moments where you thought “only she can rock that and get away with it”.  Fast forward to now and pretty much everyone is pinning up and slaying the expose bobby pin trend. Present company included.

Pin Up And Slay Your Bad Hair Day With The Bobby Pin Trend

Rihanna started the exposed bobby pin trend

I’m not going to front, when I first saw Rihanna put her bobby pins out and open in the public, I was a little skeptical.  Around the way, we call that a doobie- a protective style Dominicans wrapped your hair in after it was washed and set in the salon. Normally you wouldn’t rock it anywhere beyond  your trip home but there was Rihanna, on the red carpet and center stage accepting her iconic award in the look.  I didn’t think the look was for me or anyone for that matter but now it’s pretty much everywhere and I LOVE IT!  I tell you, Ursula Stephen (Celeb Hairstylist to bad girls like Rihanna)  is a genius. What seemed like a celeb-only style turns out to be great for anyone looking to add a little pizazz to their style and save a bad hair day.

I first rocked the look a couple weeks ago at the Brooklyn Museum Artist Ball to give my dress a modern  appeal. I added the bobby pins to both sides of my hair. It made my already straight and sleek tresses even more chic and refined.  I used silver metallic colored bobby pins to make it feel a little more special.  Playing with the bobby pins in different colors and finishes makes it feel less basic than regular old bobby pins.

This whole exposed bobby pin isn’t just for nights out or dressed up moments either. I’ve also been wearing the bobby pin look to spruce up my ponytail and help conceal bad hair days. Between you and I, it’s been a life saver and has kind of turned into my go-to.

Try the look with your ow set of bobby pins.  You can use as little or as many as you want.  As you can see, the first time I tried  the trend I was modest with the bobby pin.  After I got into the look and started wearing it more frequently, I went a little more HAM.  It really is a great way to try something fresh and cool with your style, not to mention it’s probably the most inexpensive trends ever.

What do you think of the exposed bobby pin trend?
Would you rock this look in your style?

A couple weeks ago I had the pleasure of being a part of Amazon Live’s Fashion and Beauty show, Style Code Live, talking about one of my favorite things- shoes and more shoes!!! I love it when I get booked for a gig that intertwines both my passion in media and fashion.  It’s the perfect job!

(Prepping for my segment in the green room which by the way I totally want to copy for my own place)

When the folks over at Amazon Fashion’s Style Code Live asked me to be a part of new segment they were doing, SCL+, to talk all things shoes it was a no brainer for me.  You want me to be on tv (or in this case a live feed on the internet) chatting it up about my fashion and style- where is the work?   I have 6 Emmy nominations for my work in media and this site called Kéla’s Kloset – this was an job sent from heaven.  #BookedBusyBlessed.  The segment was all about shoes which I could talk about for hours on end much less 15 minutes.  I truly believe shoes can make or break an outfit and are always worth the invest. No matter how much weight you gain or lose, your shoes always fit.  The fun thing about this segment is that it also featured a shoe closet tours of some of your favorite fashion bloggers all of which gave me real sole envy WATCH HERE

Funny story: I bought two different looks for my segment for producers to choose from.  As soon as I stepped out in this mustard yellow top and jeans, the host Dimpy sent me right back to the room-  she was wearing the exact same combo. I was actually happy about this because this red, white and gingham look was my first choice for the segment.  However you’re not suppose to wear tight prints on camera but after doing a test shot, it  all worked out!  Though the almost twin vibes with Dimpy did let me know that we were going to click on the show and boy, did we. Dimpy was so wonderful and welcoming; not all talents are so gracious to share their stage but she was more than happy to do so. Not just a talking head, she’s also the fashion producer at Amazon Live handling a lot of the content and items you see throughout the show.  I love a woman that knows her way in front of the camera and behind the scenes *raises hand*.  Like I said, we instantly connected. Check it out HERE

(Feeling like I’m kinda a big deal)

The cool thing about Style Code Live and the SCL+ segment I did to kick off the nightly show is that  1- it’s Live and 2- you can shop everything you see on the show in real time.  Since we were talking all things shoes, you could purchase both mine and Dimpy’s shoes as well as the featured bloggers while you watched the show.  How dope is that? That’s my kind of show.  I’ve actually  been wanting to get more live experience under my belt and this was THE perfect place to put my skills to the test. Co-hosting with Dimpy felt like I was kicking it with my girlfriend but with cameras filming us and  20+ million people watching. No big deal.

Watch the segment to check out all the featured shoes but here are a few pair I’m into.  I got a thing for the whole knot/ bow look happening now and love the footwear coming out of the trend.

I had the most fun on the SCL+set and and hope that I get booked to do it all again soon.

Have I ever told you kuties that Easter is my holiday ( that and Thanksgiving ) but Easter takes me back to my childhood in the south when lots of planning, preparation and pomps and circumstances went into the special day.

As a child I didn’t understand the importance of Resurrection Sunday.  I just knew it as Easter and it was  a pretty big deal in my house and church.  Where I’m from in the South ( North Carolina) church was a huge production, especially on Easter.  So as you can imagine a lot went into the day.  I remember rehearsing and memorizing scriptures and special poems to perform in church on the big day.  Of course you had to have the assemble to match because you there was no way my grandmother was putting me in front of the congregation without looking THE BEST. Let me tell you something, Easter Sunday style took Sunday Best to another level. When I tell you the adults made a big deal out of the occasion while us kids had the most fun demolishing our Easter baskets and hanging out at Easter egg hunts.
I miss those days.

As an adult the memories and joy of it all still stick with me and get me happy and giddy just thinking about it.  There just aren’t any Easter eggs or baskets however I do now  have a deeper appreciation for the day.  I definitely still go to church for the big day and of course I put together a special look for the day- I mean Grandma wouldn’t have it any other way.   And I get to experience the innocence of it all through my Godson. We have our own little tradition where we snap pictures in front of the church showing off our Sunday best

It’s not often that you get invited to dance the night away at a museum much less do so with THE Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys.  So when an invitation arrived in my inbox from the good folks at the Brooklyn Museum to two step with one of the best producers in the industry, how could I refuse.

Listen, there is no way I am ever turning down an invitation to party at the Brooklyn Museum especially  with Swizz Beatz.  Every year the Brooklyn Museum Artist Ball takes place and while I’v never attended before but I’d heard nothing but great things about the event. The event celebrates Brooklyn artists and the borough’s thriving creative community. This year Swizz Beatz and wife Alicia Keys were honored for their groundbreaking creativity, support of the arts in all its forms, and their dedication to making our world a better and more beautiful place. Guests were asked to wear blue, while they enjoyed cocktails, a seated dinner in the Museum, and an after-party with dancing and tunes provided by Swizz.  Let me tell you, a party with Swizz is like no other.  He spins all the hits- new and old and goes through a roster of his own hits that he’s created throughout the year.  It’s like the ultimate feel good event.  I danced the evening away with my girls and had the best time. To say the evening was magical is an understatement.  It was one of those NYC moments that really makes you love life and appreciate being present in the moment. It was and will forever be a night at the museum that I will never forget.

About what I wore… I’ve been holding onto this blue velvet # for a minute now waiting for the right moment to wear it.  An evening at the museum seemed like it!   And it was. Special occasions like this are also a great time to experiment with style which is just what I did with my hair.  I took the exposed bobby pin trend for a spin ( to be fair, I rocked a metallic pair so it wouldn’t seem so basic and ghetto) I gotta tell you, I loved it and now it’s my new jam that I can’t get enough of.

All in all, the Brooklyn Museum Artists Ball provided one helluva night. I can’t wait to do it again. It was and will forever be a night at the museum that I will never forget. Shoutout to my plug for the invite.

Indeed Spring has sprung but I couldn’t go any deeper into the season without sharing this fab look from this past season because no good outfit / photo op should ever go to waste.

We’ve all had this experience: You get dressed, looking all good in the cutest outfit- I’m talking hair did, face done, all with the ‘fit to match.  Maybe you go out for an errand or something but ultimately end up feeling like enough people didn’t get to see you in your flyness.  Yeah.  You know what I’m talking about.  God forbid we waste a good outfit on an empty day.  This post is dedicated to that moment in life us girls have all too often. That was this day. On this day, you couldn’t tell me shyt. I was doing the damn thing, from head to toe, and guess what y’all, I don’t think I had a damn place to go. Like NOWHERE.  Not even the grocery story so, BLOG POST.  That’s why I’m all too happy to finally post these pictures here even if  it is 3 months after the fact.  Listen, if don’t nobody else gets to see me kute,  y’all will. Love ya, MEAN IT!

Strip away the fur jacket and exchange the turtleneck for a regular t-shirt and this look is just as on point for spring.

Honestly though, this was one of my favorite looks this past season.  I’m just happy I could finally share it with you kuties but don’t be surprised if you see it reincarnated for Spring / Summer

These pictures were taken on one of those in between days when us NYers were recovering from a snowstorm while enjoying the warm winter day.  Sounds crazy.  I know.  That’s because it is.  What looks like cold winter day was actually quite warm.  On these days I take advantage of the high temperatures and layer up a dress.

It doesnt matter what my relationship status is, whether I’m coupled up or as single as a dollar bill as I have been for some time now (a really long time now), Valentine’s Day has always been one of my favorite’s.  But not for reasons you may think.

My love for red and valentines Day

Kontinue to see why I’m in love with Valentine’s Day.

My love for Valentines Day isn’t about the overflow of pink and red and the excuse to get girly and glam – I do that all the time. It all comes from my childhood, specifically how my mother made me feel on Valentines Day during my preadolescence years. Every year, my mom would surprise me with Valentines Day gift at school. It may sounds like a small deed but to a kid who has a birthday in the summer and misses out on the hallway walk of fame with gifts and balloons, it was a big deal. One year it would be flowers, another year it would be balloons, and sometimes it would be both. I never knew what I would receive or who I would receive it from. Sometimes my mom would personally delivery my gift to class, other times my name would be announced over the loud speakers to report to the office where delivery service left some other cool gift for me to retrieve.   It was always a big deal to me and I loved every bit of it. I mean what kid wouldn’t. I was the envy of all as I sashayed through the halls with my Valentines Day gift.

I love me on Valentines Day and every day for that matter

Looking back on those times, I think my mom was instilling something great within me. More than just knowing that I was loved, she was showing me that I didn’t need a boyfriend or a man per se to feel loved – something we associate with Valentines Day. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love a boo-thang to celebrate the day with but it’s not the be all of a happy Valentine’s Day  for and it damn sure doesn’t reflect whether or not I am special or loved. My mom  made me feel special with those surprise deliveries and I till cherish those memories today.  I didn’t have a boyfriend making me feel all special and loved in the 3rd grade and the fact that I don’t have one today WILL NOT make me feel any less loved. I Love me on Valentine’s Day andevery day for that matter. Turn V-Day into Me-Day.

So BOOM (I had to tie in this BOOM sweatshirt), yes I’m single and yes I will celebrate Valentine’s Day with the best of them because regardles of my relationship status I am LOVED!

A white tee-shirt is one of the most universal and classic pieces to have in your wardrobe.   Your style does matter- uptown, downtown, boho, preppy, a white tee- shirt is the quintessential must have. It’s one of those pieces that’s alway in rotation in my wardrobe, no matter the season.  It’s my go-to whenever I don’t know what to wear.  Here are a couple way I style my collection of white tee-shirts.

There’s nothing I can’t pair a white tee-shirt with.  It’s a great blank canvas to create with and works for pretty much any style I want to create.

Chic and Effortless

Hands down, there’s nothing better than a simple jeans and tee-shirt combo.  It’s the most comfortable look ever but I like to take it a little further and layer the look to escalate something cool and causal to chic and effortless.  I love layering my softer tees with dusters and lush elements like fur. Layered together, it creates the perfect casual chic look.

Girly and Glam

A good white tee-shirt is more than just tee-shirt. It can be like a blouse. More than layering, I love to pair my white tee-shirts with uber girly pieces.  I get to pull out my fun, fancy pieces that normally sit in my kloset for special occasions.  my white tee-shirt balances things out for daily wear.

Mix it with Metallic
Stumped on what to wear with the metallic trend that’s all the rage right no?  Don’t be, a white tee-shirt does the trick in a cinch.  Again, it balances the festive and fancy pieces, making it more day time friend my and casually appealing.

BLACK GIRL MAGIC
“Don’t let anybody steal your magic, yeah. But I got so much yall… You can have it.” ~ Solange

I can’t help but think about those Solange Lyrics whenever I think about black girl magic- my own magic and magic in general.  When i tell you I love Black girl magic though, TRUST! I sprinkle that shyt on every thing. It’s crazy how the term came out of nowhere a few years ago yet it’s something so many of us have known, recognized and lived with for all of our lives. Don’t ask me to define the phrase Black Girl Magic though, it just IS. It’s like Wi-Fi. You know it when you see it and when you see it, it is EVERY. THING you need and more.   It’s why I love this little pouch featured in this look.  It was gifted to me by one of my kuties. It arrived as a complete surprise with the most heart warming note thanking me for my magic that I share with others. * Insert tearful eyes*. It was a small gift with such a huge reminder that there is magic in all of us (Black or not). It’s also a reminder that you never know who is watching your magic and being inspired by it.  I’m literally just trying to be me,  doing what I have to do (yet another lyric, this time form from Brandy, another ones of my favorites) and the fact that people are inspired by that or motivated in any way is simply an honor and humbling to say the least. It’s really encouraging.

Needless to say, I wear my black girl magic every day and love that this bag makes it tangible, serving as a reminder of all that comes with my magic.
When you see someone sharing their magic- make sure you tell them and make sure they’re aware of how magical they are. I can tell you it’s a little that goes a long way.

Happy New Year Kuties!!! I’m hoping your holiday was bright and cheerful and you’re pumped to set the new year ablaze.  Granted we’re a few days into the year but it’s still pretty damn new.  With that said, I’m sure we all have a more than a few goals, dreams and new year’s resolutions we want to accomplish.  New year, New You, right? LOL.  At any rate if you haven’t given up on your new year ways just yet I got just the thing you need to win in 2017. It doesn’t really matter what you’re looking to accomplish, this year or any year for that matter, I’ve come to learn that there is only one thing you need to know to take the year by storm.

Walking into 2017 like... ready to conquer all new year's resolutions

Every year we set resolutions and every year they fall by the waste side.  Over my some odd years of life ( the specific number doesn’t matter) I’ve come to realize that there is only one thing you need to know and remember when it comes to accomplishing anything- DO NOT KNIT PICK your dreams.   As dreamers and goal diggers we get so caught up on perfection and idealism, the details of it all. At least I know I do. It’s a slippery slope, one that can easily lead to procrastination or worse, paralyzation. It’s so easy to get lost in the details and knit pick your goals i.e. “this ain’t right” or “I need this before that or that before this”.  STOP. Just stop knit picking your goals and start doing. Knit picking is the easiest way to get nowhere fast. Instead, keep your focus on the bigger picture.   It never fails, whenever I stop knit picking and stressing over the minor, the bigger picture remains in view and things work out exactly as they’re suppose to.  Case in point my recent #SnatchExperience workout.  As soon as I let go of the minor and focused on the bigger picture of sharing my workout experience with others, it worked out perfectly.  The reality is nothing will ever be perfect but in starting the process sooner than later, you will undoubtedly learn how to perfect your plan and makes things better along the way. Heck, I might still be in the planning stages of the #SnatchedExperience had I not stopped knit picking and just went with the flow.  So whether it’s that blog you’ve been wanting to start but didn’t because of ____  or a new job you want to apply for but haven’t because of ____ or a business you want to launch but won’t because of ____ ,  stop knit picking and just do damn thing. Again, it may not be perfect but you’ll be all the better for it.
Now go take 2017 by storm and show the world why this will be your best year yet!
